Our Services
Clean Energy Design, L.L.C., based in Falmouth, Massachusetts, was founded in 1996. Our company has been involved with renewable energy and energy efficiency for over 14 years. Clean Energy Design is actively involved in every aspect of the design, construction, installation and maintenance of solar photovoltaic, thermal and wind energy projects. We design, maintain and install renewable energy systems for commercial, residential, agricultural, educational, and municipal use. Our reliable and robust designs combined with our proven track record of existing systems, make us uniquely suited to designing renewable energy systems for the ever-changing climate of New England. Our company is changing the way people think about energy sources.
Our work is performed on behalf of commercial, agricultural, residential (single- and multi-family), educational, and municipal clients. Clean Energy Design installed the first inverter based, direct grid-tied, wind turbine on Cape Cod at a wind installer’s workshop at the Cape Cod Regional Technical High school in Harwich, MA. In addition to such technical work, Tom has been a key member of several local environmental organizations, has assisted in developing policy to facilitate the implementation of renewable energy systems, and was instrumental in the establishment of Massachusetts programs such as the Solar-To-Market Initiative and the adopted legislation that enables net metering across the Commonwealth.
Owner Thomas Wineman has assisted in developing policy and model zoning to lower barriers and facilitate the implementation of wind power. Tom brings fifteen years of comprehensive technical experience in renewable energy systems, energy conservation, and electric utilities to the project management team. A score of successfully completed installations in institutional, educational and residential buildings attest to his capacity and quality of work. He is a specialist in site analysis, system design and installation of multiple renewable energy system types including photovoltaic, wind energy, solar thermal for cold climates interfacing with radiant heat and hydro-air, and hybrid systems.
Solar Thermal
Solar thermal technology, commonly referred to as solar hot water, has numerous applications. The most common application of this technology is for domestic hot water production. Solar thermal collectors heat hot water using radiant heat energy directly from the sun, which is then stored in a super-insulated storage tank for later use.

Photovoltaic
Literally meaning electricity from the sun, photovoltaic (PV), or solar cells as they are often referred to are semiconductor devices that convert sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity.

Wind Energy
The development of modern wind turbine technology as it is today is rooted in research centered in Massachusetts in the early to mid 1970’s. Since the technology advancements of the 1970’s we have seen most of the research dollars in this industry being focused on development of larger and larger utility scale machines, currently being in the multi megawatt category. These advances have largely been driven by European countries which have been looking to utilizing their wind resource as a means of significantly contributing to reducing their need for imported fuel for many years.
