We are all aware that high quality and durable solar roof shingles are available for those who prefer a visually integrated solar energy system. They have been available for years (our first solar shingle installation was in 2006). Since those early years, the technology used to fabricate solar shingles has branched into a few directions (some we approve and some we don’t – but that is another post) and the size options are varied now as well. They come in large economical tiles as well as smaller more traditional sized shingles.
I wonder how many of you also know that there are now solar shingles that actually double duty offering both photovoltaic technology for electric use as well as and thermal technology for hot water and heat? The look exactly like the PV shingles because the thermal components are actually concealed under the slates themselves. The are also highly efficient. The one manufacturer who builds these double duty shingles, Atlantis Energy Systems, happens to manufacture them right here in the USA (in Poughkeepsie, NY). They call them “Building Integrated Thermal Electric Roofing System” or BITERS for short. It’s an exciting time to be in this business. Ask and ye shall receive!
Here is a diagram to illustrate how it might work in your home or business.
